NSF, White House Support Career-Life Balance Initiative for Women in the Sciences

A National Science Foundation initiative to help retain more women in science careers received the backing of the White House. The Career-Life Balance Initiative is a ten-year plan designed to give scientists more flexibility with having a family and still maintaining their careers. One part of the plan will allow scientists to delay research grant awards for up to a year when they go on parental leave for a newborn or adopted child. Learn more.

Bentley University Launches National Center for Women and Business

Bentley University, one of the nation’s leading business schools, today announced the launch of the Center for Women and Business to advance shared leadership among women and men in the business world and develop women business leaders. The Center will be led by Betsy Meyser, former senior adviser to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, and COO and chair of Women for Obama. Read more.

Celebrating Twenty Years of Women in Science

Dartmouth College is celebrating the 20th anniversary of a project aimed at getting more women to major in science, math and engineering. Since the Woman in Science Project began, the number of women majoring in those subjects has grown from 45 to 102. Read more.

Women + Girls: The Solution

At the annual Aspen Ideas Festival, this year’s program covered five tracks, including one called “Women + Girls: The Solution.” The theme presented the concept that only by helping women and girls achieve their full potential and using all of the brainpower available to us, can we hope to solve the world’s problems. The New York Times recently recapped the discussions taking place, touching on the importance of parents and mentors; gender parity; and women and leadership in science and technology.

Fixing the U.S. Science Gender Gap

In high school, girls only take 17 percent of computer-science AP tests. They earn only 18 percent of computer and information-science degrees in college, and they make up just under a quarter of computer and math professionals. A recent article in Newsweek seeks to identify the reasons why the gender gap persists and what can be done to fix it.

Financial Book Clubs for Women

Sponsored by the Sacramento Public Library,  nine book clubs are starting this summer and aim to give women a stronger foothold on their finances, especially in this still-shaky economy. Held at various library branches around the country, each of the financial book clubs is led by local women – from stay-at-home moms to business owners – who attended the library’s “Smart Investing for Women” lunchtime speaker series last year. Each volunteer chose her book from among 50 financial titles recommended by the Sacramento Public Library’s business librarian. Read more.

Title IX Helps Girls Get Jobs

In her paper Beyond the Classroom: Using Title IX to Measure the Return to High School Sports, Wharton business and public policy professor Betsey Stevenson offers evidence that playing sports leads to more education and better employment opportunities. Her paper focuses on Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which expanded high school athletic opportunities for girls. Her research compares the variation in outcomes across states for girls who went to school before Title IX and after, and concludes that playing sports paid off.

According to Stevenson, the skills associated with athletic participation and success later in life “may include the ability to communicate, the ability to work well with others, competitiveness, assertiveness and discipline.” Read more.
